Analyzing a pop culture phenomenon through social engagement

Analyzing a pop culture phenomenon through social engagement

Quarantine life keeps getting harder, but from time to time I’m able to find some small projects to entertain me, like this one.

As a big fan of #RuPaulsDragRace, I decided to analyze the four finalists’ hashtags to test the waters and see which queen is the people’s favourite for the crown this year.

In order to find more accurate outcomings, I decided to stick to my favourite #socialmedia. So, I’m sorry LinkedIn, but this is all about Twitter. To draw this comparison, I focused on engagement, trend popularity, and tweet performance, especially over the last seven days, since the #DragRace finale is tomorrow.

And here are the results I got:

#TeamGottMik is the clear front runner with almost half a million people engaging with her hashtag.
#TeamSymone is right behind it, and she is the one to be trending the most right now.
#TeamRosé and #TeamKandyMuse don’t stand a chance according to the Twitter folks, but they still inspire thousands of passionate tweets.

Approximately 70% of this traffic comes from the US and 20% came from Brazil. Bottom line, it was amazing to see such incredible organic engagement with this much representation. 🏳️‍🌈

Curious about how I got these results?

Here are the (free) tools I used:
